The tricky bit has been building something that can produce enough thrust while still being light enough to fly, without being tethered to an external power source. Now, a group of researchers have hit on a new design. At half the weight of a paper clip, ‘RoboBee X-wing’ has achieved untethered flight using ultra-lightweight solar cells, powering piezoelectric actuators, via a stripped down circuit board. This technology is in its infancy, but could pave the way for a new generation of miniature drones. Researchers hope these insect-bots could manoeuvre around much more cramped spaces than conventional, larger drones, potentially helping with environmental and disaster monitoring.

doi: 10.1038/d41586-019-02007-7

(원문: 여기를 클릭하세요~)

  Machine carries ultra-lightweight solar cells — and weighs less than a paper clip. 또는 여기를 클릭하세요~ Read the paper: Untethered flight(more…)

"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paywalled_content":false,"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paid_content":false
[36,29,30

post-3861","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-lets-do-physics","category-lets-do-science","category-recent-science-news
    Tiny flying vehicles require intricate design trade-offs and have previously relied on an external power supply.
